Why does a healthcare practice need a “social” committee anyway?

No one does a job well when they are unhappy. That was the premise that spawned the creation of Sierra Neurosurgery Group’s Brain Power Committee.

In 2007, employee morale was a bit low at SNG and we (the management team) were determined to do something about it. In order to turn things around, we recognized we needed to build a spirit of collaboration and encourage staff participation in team-building activities. The vehicle we would use to drive up employee morale was Team Brain Power.

The mission of the Brain Power Committee is to foster a fun, rewarding and satisfying work environment for the employees of Sierra Neurosurgery Group.

The Brain Power Mission: “We are committed to excellence.  With innovation, energy and team spirit we strive to encourage positive attitudes. We are dedicated to promoting and sustaining a caring family atmosphere. We support our co-workers, our physicians and our community. We are Brain Power”.

While our events have evolved over the years, certain standards remain. For one, our potlucks are legendary and we have been known to knock a few socks off with our Christmas dessert potluck.

We are community-minded fundraisers. We give annually to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and Evelyn Mount Community Services. We have responded to the needs of families displaced by fires and floods. We pool our resources every year to buy supplies for the Veteran’s Guest House, Casa de Vida, Salvation Army Silver Angels and Michael’s Kids. We join forces to wrap and wrap and wrap until every resident at two senior care facilities have something to open on Christmas morning. We take blankets, food and boots to the homeless.

The Brain Power Committee is focused on helping employees develop a positive, healthy outlook by developing healthy habits. We encourage the staff to get out and exercise with games, contests and prizes that reward exercise consistency.  Every year we assemble teams for the MS Walk, Juvenile Diabetes Walk, Make a Wish and Race for a Cure.

Working together toward a common goal – or a great potluck – the Brain Power Committee and the employees of Sierra Neurosurgery Group successfully foster a fun, rewarding and satisfying work environment. In the end that makes us all happier people and better employees, too.
