Dr. Walker educates coaches on head/spine trauma
Reno, NV–Dr. Joseph Walker of Sierra Neurosurgery Group spoke with a group of high school athletic coaches August 12, 2009 about head and spine trauma in athletes. His presentation to football and soccer coaches was part of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association pre-season coaches clinic held at Galena High School.
Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) is the non-profit governing body of high school athletics in the Silver State. Sierra Neurosurgery Group teamed up with NIAA to put on this educational program because so many high school athletes are at risk for spine and head injury. Football and soccer coaches heard a 20-minute presentation on the most common types of spine and brain injuries. Coaches also received a laminated assessment guide to help them determine the severity of injury during play and appropriate response.
Both the video taped presentation and the In-field Head & Spine Assessment Guide are available by clicking the link below. Coaches and trainers can also get a laminated copy of the guide from Donnie Nelson of the NIAA, or they can contact Leesa Genco of Sierra Neurosurgery Group.
Dr. Walker is a founding member of Sierra Neurosurgery Group and is committed to doing his part to help ensure the health and well-being of student athletes and all member’s or our community.
