March 11, 2007 – Neurosurgeon Joseph Walker, M.D. of Sierra Neurosurgery Group in Reno was interviewed in the March 11, 2007 edition of the Las Vegas Sun on the subject of head trauma in mixed marital arts fighting.
The sport of mixed marital arts fighting, which combines elements of boxing, wrestling, jiujitsu and good old fashioned street brawling, has grown both in popularity and respectability in the past few years.
The Las Vegas Sun article included a comparison by Dr. Walker of head trauma in mixed martial arts and boxing. While mixed martial arts fighters get more overall injuries than traditional boxers they are not knocked out as often. Dr Walker surmises the “relative safety” of mixed marital arts is a result of the fighters having so many other strike options.
Dr. Walker is a founding partner of Sierra Neurosurgery Group in Reno, Nevada.
