March 26, 2007 – Dyana Selby-Davis, health information management supervisor for Sierra Neurosurgery Group, was interviewed for an article in American Medical News that describes proper techniques for destroying confidential patient files.
American Medical News is a prestigious newspaper published by the American Medical Association for American physician subscribers. Each issue provides news affecting the medical profession and medical practice.
In November 2005, Sierra Neurosurgery Group began the extensive process of switching to a digital records system. Selby-Davis and her team will convert about 8,000 paper medical records and films into paperless, digital records. Selby-Davis hired a reputable document destruction company which shreds about 400 pounds of paper on-site weekly before secure removal. The firm also provides a certificate of destruction for every record destroyed.
Sierra Neurosurgery Group’s conversion to electronic medical files is almost complete and Selby-Davis anticipates a much smaller need for paper document destruction services in the future. However, patient confidentiality remains a top priority. Now she focuses on a different set of security protocols involving firewalls, passwords and secure servers.
