Sierra Neurosurgery Group physicians among first in region certified to use FDA approved Prestige Cervical Disc

People suffering from cervical degenerative disc disease have new reason to hope. Physicians at Sierra Neurosurgery Group are among an elite group nationwide that have been trained and certified to use the country's first artificial cervical disc.

The Prestige Cervical Disc, recently approved for use by The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, offers patients an effective treatment alternative for painful degeneration of the cervical disc.

"The artificial disc is a wonderful new tool for treating our patients with chronic pain from cervical degenerative disc disease," explains Jay K. Morgan, M.D., partner at Sierra Neurosurgery Group and head of Neurosurgery at Renown Health. "This is the first real alternative to cervical fusion that offers the promise of pain relief without motion limitation."

The current surgical treatment for this degenerative condition involves removing a diseased or bulging disc in a patient's neck and fusing two or more bony vertebrae. The Prestige Cervical Disc would instead replace the impaired natural disc.

Two of Sierra Neurosurgery Group's physicians, Dr. Morgan and Dr. Joseph Walker, are trained in the use of the Prestige disc. Doctors David C. Leppla and Deven Khosla are currently in training. Sierra Neurosurgery Group is the region's oldest and largest neurosurgical practice serving Northern Nevada and Northeastern California. Headquartered in Reno, Nevada, the practice has satellite offices in Carson City, Elko and Winnemucca.
