Reno, NV – Dr. Joseph Walker of Sierra Neurosurgery Group will present a lecture on the Charité® Artificial Disc to the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses. The dinner and lecture, scheduled for Wednesday, February 20, 6:30pm at the Washoe Wine Company in south Reno, will cover the indications for total disc replacement and the mechanics of the surgery.
The event is put on the by the Northern Nevada chapter of the America Association of Neuroscience Nurses and provides nurses with one continuing education unit.
According to Dr. Walker, total artificial disc replacement is an innovative surgical option for treating some patients with degenerative disc disease and related conditions. It offers an alternative to lumbar spinal fusion surgery. "For years fusion was the treatment of choice for chronic pain conditions in the lower back," explains Walker. "But fusion does limit range of motion. Artificial disc replacement retains the natural back motion."
While artificial disc replacement has been around for over 17 years, the procedure has only been FDA approved since 2004. Dr. Walker has received specialized training in the Charité total disc replacement surgery. Charité is a brand name of the artificial disc manufactured by DePuy Spine, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company.
Dr. Joseph Walker is a founding partner of Sierra Neurosurgery Group, the region's largest neurosurgical practice. Sierra Neurosurgery Group is committed to patient-focused, individualized care in the treatment of brain, spinal and peripheral nerve disorders.
